Frequently asked questions
What causes low libido in men?
Common causes include low testosterone, stress, certain medications, sleep issues, and relationship or mental health factors — your clinician reviews your history to help narrow this down. Relationship stress or unresolved mental health concerns can also play a significant role independent of hormones.
Will I need a testosterone test?
Your clinician may recommend a testosterone level and other hormone-related labs if your history and symptoms suggest a hormonal cause is likely. If hormone replacement therapy turns out to be the best option, your clinician will refer you to a specialist and help coordinate your ongoing care — General Medicine doesn't currently prescribe testosterone replacement therapy directly.
Is low libido connected to erectile dysfunction?
They can be related but aren't the same thing — your clinician can help sort out which is driving your symptoms. Addressing one doesn't always resolve the other, which is why your clinician evaluates both separately.
Can a medication I'm taking be causing this?
Yes, several common medications can affect libido — your clinician will review what you're taking as part of your visit. Common culprits include some blood pressure medications and antidepressants, among others.
What side effects are associated with low libido treatments?
This depends on the cause — if a medication is the trigger, adjusting or switching it usually resolves it. If hormone replacement therapy turns out to be the right option, your clinician will refer you to a specialist who can walk you through that treatment's specific side effects, which can include changes in mood, skin, or red blood cell counts.
