Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions can cause chronic fatigue?

Chronic fatigue has a wide differential: hypothyroidism, anemia, sleep disorders (including OSA), depression, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, chronic infections, and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) are among the most important to evaluate systematically.

What tests should I expect when being evaluated for chronic fatigue?

Initial evaluation typically includes CBC, comprehensive metabolic panel, thyroid function, iron studies, B12, vitamin D, inflammatory markers, and often a diabetes screen. Additional testing is guided by associated symptoms and clinical findings.

Could my fatigue be caused by a mental health condition?

Yes — depression and anxiety are among the most common and underrecognized causes of chronic fatigue. They're also frequently present alongside other medical conditions, which means addressing both physical and psychological contributors is often necessary for meaningful improvement.

Is there a specific treatment for ME/CFS?

ME/CFS does not have a disease-modifying treatment. Management focuses on symptom control — pacing (avoiding post-exertional malaise), sleep optimization, pain management, and addressing co-occurring conditions. Aggressive exercise is not recommended and can worsen symptoms in ME/CFS.

What side effects are associated with chronic fatigue treatments?

Treatment side effects depend on the underlying cause. Thyroid hormone replacement, iron supplementation, and antidepressants are commonly used and carry their respective side effect profiles. Sleep disorder treatment — such as CPAP — is very well tolerated. Treatment is always individualized to identified causes. Chronic Fatigue visit What to expect from a Chronic Fatigue visit
