Frequently asked questions
What causes gynecomastia?
Hormonal changes, certain medications (including some for prostate conditions or heartburn), weight changes, and some health conditions can all cause breast tissue to enlarge. Certain supplements and recreational substances can also contribute to this hormonal shift.
Is gynecomastia common?
Yes — gynecomastia is a common condition, especially during puberty and again later in life as hormone levels naturally shift with age. This is one of the more frequently seen hormonal conditions in both age groups.
How is this different from fat tissue from weight gain?
True gynecomastia involves glandular tissue and often feels firmer or has a distinct texture compared to fat, though the two can occur together — your clinician can help distinguish them. A physical exam can usually tell the two apart, though imaging is sometimes used to confirm.
Will I need labs?
Your clinician may recommend hormone-related labs — such as testosterone or thyroid levels — if your history and exam findings suggest a hormonal cause. These results can help confirm whether a hormonal imbalance is contributing to the tissue changes.
What side effects are associated with gynecomastia treatments?
If the cause is a medication, switching or adjusting it usually resolves things without adding new side effects; if hormone therapy is used to address an underlying imbalance, your clinician monitors for mood or skin changes; and surgical options, when appropriate, carry the usual recovery considerations of any procedure.
