Frequently Asked Questions

What is a ganglion cyst and what causes it?

A ganglion cyst is a benign, fluid-filled sac arising from a joint capsule or tendon sheath — most commonly on the wrist (dorsal or volar) or ankle. The cause isn't fully understood — joint stress, irritation, or minor trauma may contribute. They can appear, disappear, and reappear spontaneously.

Is a ganglion cyst dangerous?

No — ganglion cysts are benign and not associated with malignancy. They may cause pain, weakness, or limited range of motion when they compress adjacent nerves or tendons, or based on their size and location. Many are entirely asymptomatic and require no treatment.

Will my ganglion cyst go away on its own?

Approximately 40–50% of ganglion cysts resolve spontaneously without treatment. For asymptomatic cysts, watchful waiting is a reasonable approach. Historically, striking with a heavy book was practiced — this is not recommended, as it can cause injury and the cyst often recurs.

What treatment options are available for a ganglion cyst?

Aspiration — draining the cyst with a needle — is a simple office procedure with a reasonable success rate but a recurrence rate of 30–50%. Surgical excision has a lower recurrence rate (10–20%) but is reserved for symptomatic cysts that have failed aspiration or significantly limit function.

What side effects are associated with ganglion cyst treatments?

Aspiration is minimally invasive — temporary soreness, bruising, and a small infection risk are the main concerns. Surgical excision carries standard procedural risks including infection, scarring, nerve or tendon injury, and recurrence. Post-surgical stiffness and recovery time are relevant considerations for active individuals. Ganglion Cyst visit What to expect from a Ganglion Cyst visit
