Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common causes of foot pain?

Plantar fasciitis (heel pain, worst with first steps in the morning), metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain), bunions, Morton's neuroma, stress fractures, and flat foot or high arch issues are among the most frequent causes. Location, timing, and activity relationship help identify the cause.

When does foot pain need imaging?

X-rays are indicated when fracture is suspected — particularly after trauma, in patients with osteoporosis, or when pain is focal and bony. Most soft tissue foot conditions (plantar fasciitis, tendinopathy, neuromas) are diagnosed clinically. MRI or ultrasound is reserved for complex or non-resolving cases.

How is plantar fasciitis treated?

First-line treatment includes stretching (calf and plantar fascia), supportive footwear with arch support, activity modification, and NSAIDs for pain. Night splints help in persistent cases. Corticosteroid injection is an option when conservative measures are insufficient after 6–8 weeks.

Can my footwear be causing my foot pain?

Yes — unsupportive, worn-out, or ill-fitting footwear is one of the most common contributors to foot pain. Replacing shoes regularly, using orthotics or insoles, and choosing footwear appropriate to your foot type and activity can produce significant improvement without other treatment.

What side effects are associated with foot pain treatments?

NSAIDs carry GI side effect risk with regular use. Corticosteroid injections can cause temporary pain flare and, with repeated injections, fat pad atrophy and plantar fascia weakening. Orthotics and physical therapy are very safe. Surgery is reserved for refractory cases and carries standard procedural risks. Foot Pain visit What to expect from a Foot Pain visit
