Frequently asked questions

What causes psoriasis?

It's an immune-related condition that speeds up skin cell turnover, causing cells to build up on the surface faster than they can shed. Genetics and environmental triggers like stress or certain infections can both play a role in flares. Certain triggers like infections, stress, or skin injury can also set off a new flare.

Is psoriasis contagious?

No — psoriasis isn't caused by an infection and can't be spread to others through touch, sharing items, or close contact of any kind. This is a common misconception that can lead to unnecessary social stigma for people who have it.

How is psoriasis different from eczema?

Psoriasis typically causes thicker, more well-defined scaly patches, while eczema tends to be itchier and less sharply bordered — your clinician can help distinguish the two. Psoriasis also tends to appear on specific areas like elbows, knees, and the scalp more often.

Can psoriasis affect more than my skin?

Yes — some people with psoriasis also develop joint pain and swelling (psoriatic arthritis), which is worth mentioning to your clinician even if your skin is the main concern. Psoriasis has also been linked to a higher risk of certain cardiovascular and metabolic conditions.

What side effects are associated with psoriasis treatments?

Topical treatments can cause skin thinning or irritation with prolonged use; other treatments carry their own considerations your clinician will review. Your clinician will discuss which option fits best based on how much skin is affected. Your clinician will monitor for these especially with more potent topical steroid options.
