Frequently asked questions
How is HIV tested?
With a blood test, ordered through this visit and drawn at a partner lab near you, with results typically available within a few days. This same test also screens for other common infections your clinician may recommend checking.
How soon after exposure should I get tested?
Timing matters for test accuracy — your clinician can advise on the right window based on your specific situation and which test type is used. Testing too early can miss an infection that hasn't yet become detectable.
What happens if I test positive?
Your clinician discusses next steps with you directly, including connecting you with ongoing care — HIV is a manageable condition with modern treatment. Effective treatment today allows most people to live a full, healthy life.
Is this test confidential?
Yes — your visit and results are a private, confidential matter between you and your clinician, protected the same way any other medical visit is. This same confidentiality applies regardless of your test result.
What if I've had a recent high-risk exposure?
If it's been within the last 72 hours, time-sensitive preventive treatment (PEP) may be an option — let your clinician know the timing right away so they can advise you quickly. Sometimes this may require a visit in person. Acting quickly within this window can significantly reduce your risk of infection.
