Frequently Asked Questions

Who should be screened for gonorrhea?

The CDC recommends annual gonorrhea screening for all sexually active women under 25, and for older women with risk factors (new or multiple partners, inconsistent condom use). Men who have sex with men should be screened at all exposed anatomical sites (urethra, rectum, pharynx) at least annually — more frequently with multiple partners.

Can I be tested for gonorrhea without symptoms?

Yes — most gonorrhea infections produce no symptoms, which is precisely why routine screening is recommended for at-risk individuals. Urine-based NAAT testing is non-invasive and highly accurate — a pelvic exam is not required for urine collection. Rectal and pharyngeal swabs test for infection at those sites.

How is gonorrhea treated?

Current CDC guidelines recommend a single intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone — the standard first-line treatment. Antibiotic resistance in gonorrhea is an increasing concern, making adherence to current treatment guidelines important. Test-of-cure is recommended for pharyngeal infections due to higher treatment failure rates at that site.

Does my partner need to be treated if I test positive?

Yes — simultaneous partner treatment is essential to prevent reinfection. Expedited partner therapy (providing a prescription to the partner without requiring a clinical visit) is available in most states and is an important public health tool when partner evaluation cannot be arranged promptly.

What side effects are associated with gonorrhea treatment?

Intramuscular ceftriaxone causes injection site pain and occasional mild allergic reactions. Azithromycin — previously part of dual therapy — is no longer recommended due to resistance. Completing treatment and confirming cure at the pharynx are important steps. Standard antibiotic precautions regarding allergies apply.
