What is Zepbound®?

Zepbound® is the first and only FDA-approved obesity treatment that activates both GIP and GLP-1 hormone receptors. Unlike semaglutide-based medications, which target only a single receptor, Zepbound®'s dual mechanism is what makes it a distinct—and in clinical trials, more powerful—option for weight loss and long-term weight management.

Taken once weekly, the Zepbound® injection helps signal fullness sooner, reduce hunger between meals, and support healthier metabolic responses over time. Most patients begin at a lower dose (2.5 mg weekly) and increase every four weeks based on their tolerance and response.

Slows gastric emptying

This keeps food in your stomach longer, making you feel full longer and helping you eat less without fighting constant hunger.

Reduces appetite and food cravings

By activating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors in your brain. This dual stimulation may quiet the mental "food noise" more effectively than single-receptor GLP-1 therapies.

Improves insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation

Meaning your body gets better at using the energy you eat rather than storing it as excess body fat—a meaningful benefit for overall metabolic health.

Frequently asked questions about Zepbound®

How is Zepbound® different from Wegovy® or other GLP-1 medications?

Zepbound® (tirzepatide) targets both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, while semaglutide-based medications only target GLP-1. Clinical trials show this dual mechanism leads to greater average weight loss. In the direct SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial, tirzepatide outperformed semaglutide over 72 weeks.

How long does it take to work?

Appetite changes are often noticeable within the first few weeks. Visible weight loss typically builds over the course of the 72-week treatment periods studied in clinical trials, with many patients seeing meaningful results by weeks 8–12.

Can I switch from Zepbound® to an injectable or oral option later?

Yes. Your General Medicine clinician will stay involved and can discuss switching to another GLP-1 or weight loss therapy if your goals or needs change.

Is Zepbound® safe long-term?

Zepbound® has been studied in clinical trials up to 72 weeks with a well-characterized safety profile. As with all prescription medications, long-term use should be supervised by a clinician who can monitor your health and adjust treatment accordingly.

Will insurance cover Zepbound®?

Coverage varies by plan. Prior authorization is commonly required, but at General Medicine, we make that process seamless. Moreover, most Medicare Part D plans do not currently cover it for weight management alone. Our team can help you navigate insurance coverage and explore savings options.

What are common side effects?

Side effects are typically mild to moderate, tend to occur during the dose-escalation period, and improve over time. They may include: nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, decreased appetite, stomach pain or indigestion.More serious but less common risks include gallbladder problems, pancreatitis, and kidney problems. Zepbound® should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). Zepbound® should not be used with other tirzepatide-containing products or any GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines.
