Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if what I'm experiencing is clinical anxiety or normal stress?

Normal stress is proportionate, tied to specific events, and resolves when the situation does. Clinical anxiety is persistent, often disproportionate, and interferes with daily functioning — work, relationships, sleep — regardless of whether a clear stressor is present.

Do I need medication, therapy, or both?

Evidence supports both medication and psychotherapy — particularly CBT — as effective for anxiety disorders, with combination treatment often superior. The right approach depends on anxiety type, severity, your preferences, and practical access. Many people respond well to either alone.

How long will I need to take anxiety medication?

For most people, a recommended treatment course is at least 6–12 months after symptom remission. Some individuals benefit from longer-term treatment, particularly those with recurrent anxiety or underlying conditions. This is an individualized decision made with your clinician.

Are SSRIs addictive?

No — SSRIs and SNRIs are not habit-forming or addictive. However, stopping them abruptly can cause discontinuation symptoms — dizziness, nausea, irritability — which is why tapering under clinical guidance is recommended when discontinuing treatment.

What side effects are associated with anxiety treatments?

SSRIs and SNRIs may cause nausea, headache, insomnia, and sexual side effects — often improving after the first 2–4 weeks. Buspirone is well tolerated with minimal side effects. Benzodiazepines are effective short-term but carry dependence risk with regular use. Anxiety visit What to expect from a Anxiety visit
