Frequently asked questions
What causes warts?
One common cause is a virus (HPV) that infects the top layer of skin, causing the rough, raised growth — there are many strains, and most cause harmless skin warts. Warts can appear anywhere on the body, though hands and feet are the most common locations.
Are warts contagious?
Yes — some warts can spread through direct skin contact or shared surfaces like pool decks, locker rooms, or shared towels, especially through small skin breaks. This is why avoiding walking barefoot in shared wet areas can help reduce your risk.
Will warts go away on their own?
Many warts do go away on their own eventually, especially in children, but this can take months to years — treatment speeds up clearance considerably. Your clinician can discuss the tradeoffs between waiting and starting treatment sooner.
How is a wart different from a callus or corn?
Warts often have tiny black dots (clotted blood vessels) and disrupt normal skin lines, while calluses and corns don't — your clinician can help confirm the diagnosis. Getting the right diagnosis matters since the treatment approaches for these are quite different.
What side effects are associated with wart treatments?
Skin irritation, redness, or mild pain at the treatment site is common, especially with more aggressive options like freezing or acid-based treatments. Multiple treatment sessions are often needed, since a single treatment doesn't always fully clear a wart.
