Frequently Asked Questions

What is a skin tag and what causes it?

Skin tags (acrochordons) are small, soft, flesh-colored benign growths that hang off the skin on a thin stalk — most commonly found on the neck, armpits, groin, and eyelids where skin rubs against skin or clothing. They are associated with friction, obesity, diabetes, and pregnancy but are entirely benign.

Do skin tags need to be removed?

Skin tags are harmless and don't require removal for medical reasons. Treatment is considered when they cause irritation from friction, catch on jewelry or clothing, bleed repeatedly, or are cosmetically bothersome. Any lesion that is rapidly changing, irregular, or pigmented should be evaluated before assuming it is a skin tag.

Can I remove a skin tag at home?

At-home removal is generally not recommended — cutting with scissors or tying off with thread risks bleeding, infection, and incomplete removal. OTC freezing kits have limited effectiveness. Clinical removal is quick, safe, and definitively removes the lesion with minimal discomfort under local anesthesia.

Will skin tags grow back after removal?

Successfully removed skin tags do not regrow at the same site. New skin tags may develop elsewhere over time — particularly if contributing factors like friction and weight remain unchanged. Removal addresses individual lesions rather than the underlying predisposition.

What side effects are associated with skin tag removal?

Cryotherapy causes temporary redness, blistering, and pigmentation changes — particularly relevant in darker skin tones. Snip excision under local anesthesia causes brief discomfort and a small scar. Electrocautery is very effective with minimal scarring. All methods are very safe with low complication rates for this superficial procedure. Skin Tag visit What to expect from a Skin Tag visit
