What is Vascepa (icosapent ethyl)?

Vascepa is a prescription-grade purified omega-3 fatty acid medication containing icosapent ethyl (EPA), used to lower very high triglyceride levels and—at the cardiovascular dose—to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in high-risk patients with elevated triglycerides who are already on statin therapy. Unlike fish oil supplements, Vascepa contains only EPA without DHA, which is important because DHA can raise LDL cholesterol. At prescription doses, it delivers far more EPA than any supplement and has demonstrated meaningful reductions in cardiovascular events in clinical trials.

Pure EPA formulation

Contains only icosapent ethyl (eicosapentaenoic acid) without DHA, avoiding the LDL-raising effect associated with DHA while delivering the triglyceride-lowering and cardiovascular-protective benefits attributed specifically to EPA.

Triglyceride reduction

At 4g daily, Vascepa reduces very high triglyceride levels by approximately 20–30% through multiple mechanisms including reduced hepatic triglyceride synthesis and increased triglyceride clearance from the blood.

Cardiovascular event reduction

The REDUCE-IT trial demonstrated that high-dose Vascepa reduced major cardiovascular events—including heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death—by approximately 25% in high-risk statin-treated patients with elevated triglycerides.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vascepa the same as fish oil supplements?

No. Vascepa is a pharmaceutical-grade purified EPA prescribed at 4g daily — far higher than any supplement. It contains only EPA without DHA, and has clinical trial evidence for cardiovascular risk reduction that supplements do not.

What is Vascepa's most important proven benefit?

The REDUCE-IT trial demonstrated that Vascepa reduces major cardiovascular events — heart attack, stroke, and cardiovascular death — by approximately 25% in high-risk statin-treated patients with elevated triglycerides.

How long before Vascepa lowers my triglycerides?

Triglyceride reductions are typically measurable within 4–8 weeks. However, the cardiovascular benefits extend beyond triglyceride lowering — continuing treatment consistently is important regardless of triglyceride response.

What side effects might I experience?

Vascepa is generally well tolerated. Peripheral edema, atrial fibrillation, and minor bleeding risk are the most clinically notable effects. GI side effects — fishy aftertaste, burping, nausea — are less common than with unrefined fish oil.

Should I take Vascepa with food?

Yes. Taking Vascepa capsules with food — particularly a meal containing some fat — improves absorption and significantly reduces any potential GI side effects. Swallow capsules whole without crushing or chewing.
