What is Mounjaro®?

Mounjaro® activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors simultaneously—making it a different type of diabetes medication than traditional GLP-1 therapies like Ozempic®. It's why Mounjaro® consistently outperformed alternatives in clinical trials.

Mounjaro® is an incredibly powerful diabetes medication. While it shares the same active ingredient (tirzepatide) as Zepbound®, it is specifically FDA-approved for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve glycemic control.

Taken once weekly, Mounjaro® works by activating the body's receptors to stimulate insulin production, suppress glucagon release, slow gastric emptying, and reduce appetite. Most patients start at a lower initiation dose and increase to a higher maintenance dose based on their blood sugar response and tolerance.

Delivers superior blood sugar control

by activating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which work together to stimulate insulin release when blood sugar is elevated and reduce glucagon secretion—resulting in consistently better A1C reductions.

Slows gastric emptying

to prevent post-meal blood sugar spikes and promote a feeling of fullness that can support weight management as an important secondary benefit for patients with type 2 diabetes.

Reduces appetite and food intake

by activating receptors in areas of the brain important for appetite regulation and reducing food noise.

Improves insulin sensitivity

and helps your body use glucose more effectively, reducing the amount of sugar your liver produces and helping your muscles take up more glucose from the bloodstream.

Clinical outcomes and care2.4%
Mounjaro® delivered superior blood sugar reduction versus all other treatments in clinical trials. Participants achieved an average 1.8% to 2.4% reduction in A1C depending on dose and starting point.

In a study against semaglutide, Mounjaro® demonstrated significantly better A1C reductions – meaning more patients achieved their blood sugar goals.

While not indicated for weight loss, participants treated with Mounjaro® lost between 12 lbs and 25 lbs on average across studies.

Frequently asked questions about Mounjaro®

How is Mounjaro® different from Zepbound® or other GLP-1 medications?

Mounjaro® and Zepbound® contain the same active ingredient (tirzepatide), but they have different FDA-approved indications. Mounjaro® is specifically approved for adults and children (10 years and older) with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control. Zepbound® is approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight—regardless of whether they have diabetes. If you have type 2 diabetes, Mounjaro® is the appropriate choice. If you're seeking weight loss without diabetes, Zepbound® may be more appropriate.

Mounjaro® also differs from single-receptor GLP-1 medications like Ozempic® (semaglutide) because it activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, which has resulted in greater A1C reductions in clinical trials.

How long does it take to work?

Blood sugar improvements often begin within the first few weeks of treatment. Most patients see meaningful A1C reductions within 8–12 weeks, with some patients reaching an A1C target of ≤7% as early as 8 weeks and ≤6.5% by 12 weeks. Significant weight loss can occur as early as 28 weeks.

Can I switch to a different diabetes medication later?

Yes. Your General Medicine clinician will stay involved and can discuss switching to another medication if your needs or goals change—whether that's a different GLP-1 like Ozempic®, an oral option like Rybelsus®, or adjusting your overall diabetes management plan.

Is Mounjaro® safe long-term?

Mounjaro® has been studied in clinical trials ranging from 40 to 52 weeks with a well-characterized safety profile. Long-term use should always be supervised by a clinician who can monitor your blood sugar, A1C, weight, and overall metabolic health and adjust treatment as needed.

Will insurance cover Mounjaro®?

Most Medicare Part D plans and commercial insurance plans cover Mounjaro® for adults with type 2 diabetes, though prior authorization is commonly required. Eligible commercially insured patients may pay as little as $25 per month with Eli Lilly's savings card (up to $1,950 in annual savings). Medicare/Medicaid patients cannot use manufacturer savings cards but may qualify for Medicare Extra Help or other assistance programs. Our team can help you navigate your insurance coverage.

What are common side effects?

The most common side effects of Mounjaro® are typically mild to moderate, occur most often during dose escalation, and tend to improve over time. They may include: nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, abdominal pain.

More serious but less common risks include pancreatitis, changes in vision, low blood sugar , kidney problems, and gallbladder problems. Mounjaro® should not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
