What is Lotrel?

Lotrel is a combination blood pressure medication containing amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, and benazepril, an ACE inhibitor. Together, these two medications lower blood pressure through two distinct and complementary mechanisms, providing greater reduction than either drug alone. Amlodipine relaxes the walls of blood vessels by blocking calcium entry into smooth muscle cells, while benazepril reduces the production of angiotensin II—a potent vasoconstrictor and driver of fluid retention. Combining them in one tablet simplifies the regimen and improves adherence for patients who need dual therapy. It's taken once daily.

Dual complementary blood pressure reduction

Amlodipine blocks calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle to cause direct vasodilation, while benazepril inhibits ACE to reduce angiotensin II production—attacking hypertension through two independent and additive pathways simultaneously.

Benazepril reduces intraglomerular pressure and protein leakage, providing kidney-protective benefits beyond blood pressure control—particularly valuable for hypertensive patients with diabetes or early chronic kidney disease.
