Frequently asked questions

What are the most important risk factors for heart disease?

High blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and family history of early cardiovascular disease are the most significant modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors. Addressing modifiable risk factors — even partially — meaningfully reduces lifetime cardiovascular risk.

What symptoms suggest I might have heart disease?

Chest pain or pressure (particularly with exertion), shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, leg swelling, and lightheadedness or fainting can all indicate cardiac involvement. New or worsening symptoms warrant prompt evaluation, and some need same-day assessment. Chest pain at rest with shortness of breath, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw is an emergency — call 911, don't book a visit.

How is heart disease diagnosed?

Diagnosis involves clinical history, physical exam, ECG, blood tests (including cardiac biomarkers and lipids), and imaging — which may include echocardiogram, stress testing, coronary CT angiography, or cardiac catheterization depending on the clinical question and level of suspicion — your clinician will start with the least invasive option that answers it.

Can heart disease be reversed?

Atherosclerosis can be stabilized and progression slowed significantly with aggressive risk factor management — statins, blood pressure control, smoking cessation, and exercise. Some evidence suggests modest plaque regression with optimal therapy. Complete reversal of established disease is not currently achievable.

What side effects are associated with heart disease treatments?

Statins may cause muscle aches and liver enzyme changes. ACE inhibitors can cause cough. Beta-blockers may cause fatigue and cold extremities. Antiplatelet agents like aspirin carry bleeding risk. Each medication's side effect profile is weighed against its demonstrated cardiovascular benefit.
