What is Contrave®?

Contrave® is a prescription medication that combines two medicines—bupropion and naltrexone—to support weight loss. It's designed for people who struggle with appetite, cravings, or emotional eating and want additional help alongside lifestyle changes.

Taken twice daily by mouth (two tablets in the morning, two in the evening), Contrave® helps reduce appetite and manage cravings over time. The dose starts low and gradually increases over four weeks to minimize side effects and help your body adjust.

Contrave® affects the parts of the brain involved in hunger, reward, and cravings. Over time, it can help reduce appetite and make cravings easier to manage.

Targets hunger in the hypothalamus

The brain's appetite control center—helping you feel satisfied with less food and reducing the drive to eat between meals.

Reduces cravings through the reward system

By affecting the parts of the brain that create those hard-to-resist urges for specific foods, especially during times of stress or boredom.

Works differently than GLP-1s

While medications like Wegovy® or Saxenda® slow digestion and work through gut hormones, Contrave® acts directly in the brain—which means it may work for people who haven't had success with other weight-loss medications.

Supports sustainable changes

Weight loss isn't just about willpower. Biology plays a big role in hunger and cravings. Having medical support can make healthy changes feel more doable and more sustainable.

Frequently asked questions about Contrave®

How does Contrave® actually help with weight loss?

Contrave® doesn't speed up metabolism or burn fat on its own. Instead, it helps quiet appetite and reduce cravings, which can make it easier to eat less without feeling constantly hungry or deprived. That support can make long-term changes feel more realistic.

How long does it take to see results?

Some people notice changes in appetite within a few weeks, but meaningful weight loss usually builds over several months. Progress is gradual, and results vary. Your clinician will help track how it's working and decide whether it's worth continuing. You should evaluate your progress at 12 weeks—if you haven't lost at least 4-5% of your starting weight by then, the medication may not be working for you.

What side effects should I expect early on?

Common side effects include nausea, headache, constipation, dry mouth, or trouble sleeping, especially during the dose ramp-up. These often improve as your body adjusts. Starting slowly is intentional and helps reduce discomfort. More serious but less common risks include increased blood pressure or heart rate, liver problems, and seizures (especially in people with a history of seizures or eating disorders). Because Contrave® contains bupropion (an antidepressant), it carries a boxed warning about increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors—you and your family should watch for changes in mood or behavior, especially when starting treatment or changing doses.

Can I take Contrave® if I'm on other medications?

Contrave® has several important drug interactions. You cannot take it if you're currently using opioid pain medications, taking other medications that contain bupropion (like Wellbutrin®), or if you've taken MAOIs in the past 14 days. You also cannot take it if you're dependent on opioids or in opioid withdrawal. Your clinician will review your full medication list to make sure Contrave® is safe for you.

Is Contrave® the same as an antidepressant or a smoking cessation medication?

No. While Contrave® contains bupropion (which is used as an antidepressant under the brand name Wellbutrin® and for smoking cessation under the brand name Zyban®), Contrave® is not approved for treating depression or helping people quit smoking. The combination of bupropion and naltrexone in Contrave® is specifically designed for weight loss and works differently than either medication alone

Will insurance cover Contrave®?

Insurance coverage varies significantly by plan. Contrave® is sometimes covered by commercial insurance for weight loss, though prior authorization is often required. Medicare Part D generally does not cover weight-loss medications. Coverage also depends on whether you meet specific criteria (BMI thresholds, documented weight-related health conditions, evidence of trying other weight-loss methods first). Our team can help you navigate your insurance options and explore manufacturer savings programs if available.
