What is Zovirax (acyclovir)?

Zovirax is an antiviral medication used to treat infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and varicella-zoster virus, including genital herpes, cold sores, chickenpox, and shingles. It works by targeting a viral enzyme to block DNA replication inside infected cells, limiting the virus's ability to spread and reproduce. Zovirax is available in oral tablets, topical cream, and intravenous formulations. The oral form is used for initial and recurrent outbreaks and for suppressive therapy; the topical cream provides mild relief for cold sores; and IV acyclovir is used for severe or systemic herpes infections.

Viral thymidine kinase activation

Acyclovir is selectively activated by herpes virus-encoded thymidine kinase inside infected cells, concentrating its antiviral effect where the virus is actively replicating while minimizing effects on uninfected tissue.

DNA polymerase chain termination

The activated form of Acyclovir is incorporated into viral DNA and acts as a chain terminator, halting the replication of viral genetic material and preventing the production of new infectious virus particles.

Multiple formulation versatility

Available as oral tablets for systemic treatment and suppression, topical cream for local cold sore relief, and IV formulation for severe or disseminated infections—providing treatment options across the full spectrum of herpes virus disease severity.

Frequently Asked Questions

What viral infections does Zovirax treat?

Zovirax treats infections caused by herpes simplex virus (cold sores and genital herpes), varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox and shingles), and in severe cases, herpes encephalitis via IV administration.

What's the difference between using Zovirax for outbreaks versus daily suppression?

For outbreaks, higher doses are taken for 5–10 days to shorten the episode. For daily suppressive therapy, a lower dose taken consistently reduces outbreak frequency and viral shedding between episodes.

Why do I need to drink plenty of water with oral Zovirax?

Acyclovir can crystallize in the kidneys and cause kidney damage if fluid intake is inadequate — particularly at higher doses. Staying well hydrated throughout treatment is an important safety measure.

What side effects might I experience?

Headache and nausea are most commonly reported with oral use. At high doses, kidney effects and neurological symptoms can occur. The topical cream may cause mild local stinging or burning at the application site.

Does Zovirax eliminate the herpes virus from my body?

No. Acyclovir manages herpes — reducing outbreak frequency and severity — but does not eliminate the virus, which remains dormant in nerve tissue even during symptom-free periods. The virus can reactivate at any time.
