What is Ezetimibe?

Ezetimibe is a prescription cholesterol-lowering medication that works differently from statins—rather than reducing cholesterol production in the liver, it blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine. It's used to lower LDL cholesterol either alone or in combination with a statin, where its complementary mechanism can achieve greater LDL reduction than either drug alone. Ezetimibe is taken once daily and is particularly valuable for patients who can't tolerate statins at higher doses or need additional LDL lowering beyond what their statin achieves. It's well-tolerated with a minimal side effect profile.

Intestinal cholesterol absorption blockade

Blocks the NPC1L1 transporter in the small intestinal lining, selectively preventing the absorption of dietary and biliary cholesterol without affecting the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins or triglycerides.

Complementary statin combination

Works through a completely different mechanism than statins, making the combination of Ezetimibe and a statin more effective than either alone—statins reduce cholesterol production while Ezetimibe reduces absorption, attacking LDL elevation from two independent directions.

Statin-intolerant alternative

For patients who can't tolerate full statin doses due to muscle side effects, Ezetimibe provides meaningful LDL lowering through a mechanism unrelated to HMG-CoA reductase, offering a well-tolerated option to improve cholesterol control.
