What is Orlistat?

Orlistat is a prescription weight loss medication that works by blocking the digestion and absorption of dietary fat in the gastrointestinal tract. Unlike centrally acting weight loss drugs that suppress appetite or affect the brain, Orlistat works entirely within the gut—inhibiting pancreatic lipase enzymes so that about one-third of the fat consumed in a meal passes through the digestive system unabsorbed. It's taken with each main meal containing fat and is used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and exercise. The unabsorbed fat that passes through can cause oily or loose stools, particularly if a high-fat meal is eaten.

Blocks pancreatic and gastric lipase enzymes that break down dietary triglycerides into absorbable fatty acids and monoglycerides—preventing approximately 30% of consumed fat from being digested and absorbed.

Works entirely within the gastrointestinal tract without entering the bloodstream in significant amounts, avoiding the cardiovascular and CNS side effects associated with systemic weight loss medications.
