When does a wound need professional medical care?

Seek evaluation for wounds that are deep, gaping, or won't stop bleeding after 10–15 minutes of pressure; involve the face, hands, or genitals; are caused by animal or human bites, punctures, or rusty objects; show signs of infection (increasing redness, warmth, swelling, purulent drainage, red streaks, or fever); or occur in someone with diabetes or immunosuppression.

Does my wound need stitches?

Wounds longer than half an inch, with gaping edges that don't stay together, or located over joints typically benefit from closure. Lacerations more than 6–8 hours old or heavily contaminated may be closed differently or left to heal by secondary intention. A clinical evaluation determines the appropriate closure method.

How do I properly care for a wound at home?

Clean gently with mild soap and water or saline — avoid hydrogen peroxide and iodine on healing wounds, as they damage new tissue. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment and cover with a non-stick dressing. Change the dressing daily or when soiled. Keep the wound moist — not wet — to support healing.

Do I need a tetanus booster for my wound?

Tetanus boosters are recommended if you haven't had one in 5 years for dirty wounds or 10 years for clean wounds. If vaccination history is unknown, a tetanus shot is given. Tetanus immunoglobulin (TIG) is also given for high-risk wounds in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated individuals.

What side effects are associated with wound treatments?

Topical antibiotic ointments (bacitracin, neomycin) occasionally cause contact allergic reactions — particularly neomycin. Plain petrolatum is a well-tolerated alternative. Local anesthetic injection for laceration repair causes brief stinging. Sutures require removal at appropriate timing — delayed removal increases scarring risk.
