What is Vyleesi (Bremelanotide)?

Vyleesi is a prescription injectable medication approved for premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD)—a condition marked by persistently low sexual desire that causes personal distress. Unlike Addyi, which is taken daily, Vyleesi is used on-demand—injected into the abdomen or thigh 45 minutes before anticipated sexual activity and used no more than once per 24 hours. It works by activating melanocortin receptors in the brain that are involved in sexual motivation and arousal. The most common side effect is temporary nausea after injection.

Melanocortin receptor activation

Activates MC3R and MC4R receptors in the central nervous system, stimulating neural pathways associated with sexual motivation and arousal through a mechanism distinct from hormonal or vascular treatments.

On-demand dosing

Taken only when desired, 45 minutes before sexual activity—offering a situational approach to HSDD for women who prefer not to take a daily medication or who don't respond to Addyi.

Non-hormonal brain-based mechanism

Works through the central nervous system's melanocortin system rather than sex hormones, making it an option for women who want or need to avoid estrogen- or testosterone-based therapies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should I inject Vyleesi?

Inject Vyleesi approximately 45 minutes before anticipated sexual activity. The effect window lasts about 8–12 hours. Do not use more than one dose within 24 hours — and no more than one dose every 8 hours.

Is Vyleesi the same as Addyi?

No. Vyleesi is an on-demand injection used before activity, while Addyi is a daily pill. Both treat HSDD in premenopausal women, but through different mechanisms. Some people prefer the situational approach Vyleesi offers.

Does Vyleesi work for all women with low sexual desire?

Vyleesi is specifically approved for premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) that causes personal distress. It is not approved for postmenopausal women or for relationship-driven desire differences.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea is the most commonly reported side effect — affecting a significant proportion of users. Flushing, headache, and transient increases in blood pressure can also occur. Nausea typically resolves within 12 hours.

Can I use Vyleesi if I have high blood pressure?

Use caution. Bremelanotide can cause transient blood pressure increases lasting several hours after injection. It is not recommended for people with uncontrolled hypertension or known cardiovascular disease.
