Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most common causes of vulvar itching?

Vaginal yeast infection, contact or allergic dermatitis (from soaps, detergents, pads, or fabric), bacterial vaginosis, lichen sclerosus, lichen simplex chronicus, atrophic vaginitis, and skin conditions like psoriasis are among the most common causes. Identifying the specific cause is important — treatments differ significantly.

How do I know if it's a yeast infection or something else?

Yeast infection causes intense itching with thick, white discharge and no significant odor. Contact dermatitis causes burning and rawness, often without discharge. Lichen sclerosus presents as white, thinned, fragile skin. Bacterial vaginosis causes itching with thin, grayish discharge and fishy odor. Clinical evaluation or appropriate testing distinguishes between these.

Is it safe to use OTC hydrocortisone on the vulva?

Low-potency OTC hydrocortisone can provide short-term relief for inflammatory causes — contact dermatitis, lichen simplex — but should not be used on suspected fungal or bacterial infections, as it worsens these conditions. It should also not be applied inside the vaginal canal. Brief use with clinical guidance is safest.

Could my hygiene routine be causing vulvar itching?

Yes — the vulva is self-cleaning and sensitive. Soaps, douches, scented products, dryer sheets, and harsh detergents are common irritants. Switching to fragrance-free, mild products and avoiding internal cleansing often resolves contact-related itching without any treatment.

What side effects are associated with vulvar itching treatments?

Antifungal creams are well tolerated with minimal local effects. Topical steroids (for lichen sclerosus) carry skin thinning risk with prolonged misuse — but appropriate use for lichen sclerosus is essential and safe. Vaginal estrogen cream for atrophic vaginitis is very well tolerated locally. Vulvar Itching visit What to expect from a Vulvar Itching visit
