Frequently Asked Questions

When does vomiting require medical evaluation?

Seek evaluation for vomiting lasting more than 24–48 hours, associated with high fever, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, signs of dehydration, significant weight loss, or following a head injury. Vomiting in infants, young children, and older adults warrants lower thresholds for prompt evaluation.

How do I prevent dehydration when I can't keep fluids down?

Sipping small amounts of clear fluid — oral rehydration solution, water, diluted electrolyte drinks — every few minutes is more effective than drinking larger amounts at once. Ice chips are helpful when liquids aren't tolerated. Medical evaluation is warranted if oral rehydration is consistently unsuccessful.

Could my vomiting be caused by a medication?

Yes — many medications including opioids, antibiotics, NSAIDs, chemotherapy, and certain supplements commonly cause nausea and vomiting. If vomiting began around the time of a medication change, a clinical review is appropriate.

What is the difference between nausea and vomiting caused by a GI issue versus a neurological one?

GI causes typically involve abdominal symptoms, association with food, and diarrhea or pain. Neurological causes — such as vestibular disorders, migraines, or increased intracranial pressure — often include vertigo, headache, or visual changes. This distinction guides investigation and treatment.

What side effects are associated with anti-nausea treatments?

Ondansetron is well tolerated — headache and constipation are the most common side effects. Promethazine and metoclopramide may cause significant sedation and carry movement disorder risks (tardive dyskinesia) with prolonged use. Antihistamines cause drowsiness. Medication choice is matched to cause and severity. Vomiting visit What to expect from a Vomiting visit
