What is Veregen (Sinecatechins)?

Veregen is a prescription botanical topical ointment derived from green tea extract, used to treat external genital and perianal warts caused by HPV in immunocompetent adults. It's the first botanical drug approved by the FDA for a prescription indication and works through a combination of antiviral, antiproliferative, and immune-modulating mechanisms. Applied three times daily, it has a slower onset than some other wart treatments but is generally well-tolerated. It's designed for patient self-administration at home and typically requires 8–16 weeks of consistent use to achieve clearance.

Multi-mechanism botanical activity

Sinecatechins—a standardized green tea polyphenol extract—exert antiviral effects against HPV-infected tissue, inhibit cellular proliferation of wart cells, and activate local immune responses that help clear the lesions.

Antiviral and antiproliferative

Green tea catechins interfere with the ability of HPV-infected keratinocytes to replicate and survive, reducing wart tissue growth while also directly affecting viral activity within the lesion.

FDA-approved botanical

The first and only botanical prescription drug approved by the FDA, Veregen provides a plant-derived treatment option for HPV warts—an alternative to immune modulators, cytotoxic agents, and physical destruction methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Veregen treatment take to clear genital warts?

Treatment typically requires 8–16 weeks of consistent three-times-daily application. Response varies — some people clear warts sooner, but the full course is often needed for complete clearance.

How is Veregen different from Aldara or Condylox for HPV warts?

Veregen works through immune activation and antiproliferative properties of green tea polyphenols — a plant-based mechanism distinct from imiquimod's immune system activation or podofilox's cell-destructive action.

Do I need to come to the clinic for each Veregen treatment?

No. Veregen is designed for patient self-application at home three times daily — no clinic visits are required for each treatment session. Your clinician will monitor progress at follow-up appointments.

What side effects might I experience?

Local reactions at the application site — including erythema, erosion, excoriation, flaking, and pain — are very common and expected. These reflect the immune activation response and typically resolve after treatment is complete.

Will the warts come back after Veregen treatment?

Recurrence is possible because HPV remains in surrounding tissue even after visible warts clear. Some people experience recurrent warts over time. Continuing follow-up with your clinician helps monitor for and manage any recurrence.
