What is Vaxchora?

Vaxchora is an oral cholera vaccine taken as a single dose to protect adults traveling to areas where cholera is endemic or epidemic. It contains a live, attenuated (weakened) strain of Vibrio cholerae that can't cause disease but effectively stimulates the immune system. Unlike injectable vaccines, it works at the mucosal level—generating immune responses in the intestinal lining where cholera bacteria actually cause infection. The single-dose oral regimen makes it uniquely convenient, and protective immunity develops within 10 days of vaccination, lasting at least 3 months.
