What is Vaxchora?

Vaxchora is an oral cholera vaccine taken as a single dose to protect adults traveling to areas where cholera is endemic or epidemic. It contains a live, attenuated (weakened) strain of Vibrio cholerae that can't cause disease but effectively stimulates the immune system. Unlike injectable vaccines, it works at the mucosal level—generating immune responses in the intestinal lining where cholera bacteria actually cause infection. The single-dose oral regimen makes it uniquely convenient, and protective immunity develops within 10 days of vaccination, lasting at least 3 months.

Live attenuated mucosal immunity

The weakened V. cholerae strain colonizes the intestinal tract briefly, stimulating both local IgA antibody production at the gut mucosa and systemic immune responses—training the immune system to recognize and neutralize real cholera toxin and bacteria.

Single-dose oral convenience

One packet dissolved in water provides the entire vaccination course—no injections, no multi-dose schedule—making it the most straightforward cholera prevention option available for travelers.

Rapid protection onset

Protective immunity develops within 10 days of the single dose, accommodating travelers who may have limited time before departure to regions with active cholera transmission.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who should get the Vaxchora cholera vaccine?

Vaxchora is recommended for adults aged 18–64 traveling to areas where cholera is endemic or epidemic. The CDC and travel medicine clinicians can advise on specific destinations where the risk warrants vaccination.

How is Vaxchora taken?

Mix the contents of both foil pouches into the provided buffer solution, drink it as a single dose, and avoid eating or drinking for at least one hour before and after. The full dose is one drink — nothing else is required.

How far in advance of travel should I take Vaxchora?

Take it at least 10 days before potential exposure to allow adequate time for protective immunity to develop. Earlier vaccination is fine — protection develops within 10 days and lasts approximately 3–6 months.

Are there any side effects from Vaxchora?

Since it contains a live attenuated bacterial vaccine, mild GI symptoms — nausea, abdominal cramping, and diarrhea — can occur in some people. Fatigue and headache have also been reported. Effects are generally short-lived.

Can I take antibiotics around the time of Vaxchora vaccination?

No. Antibiotics kill the live bacteria in the vaccine and prevent an immune response from developing. Avoid antibiotics for at least 3 days before and during the vaccination process.
