Frequently Asked Questions

How effective is a vasectomy at preventing pregnancy?

Vasectomy is one of the most effective forms of contraception — with a failure rate of less than 0.1% after confirmed azoospermia. It is considered permanent and is not reliably reversible, though reversal procedures exist with variable success rates depending on time elapsed.

How long until a vasectomy is effective?

A vasectomy is not immediately effective. Sperm remain in the reproductive tract after the procedure. A semen analysis is required — typically at 8–16 weeks or after 20 ejaculations — to confirm azoospermia (absence of sperm). Contraception should be used until clearance is confirmed.

What does the vasectomy procedure involve?

Vasectomy is an outpatient procedure performed under local anesthesia — typically taking 15–30 minutes. The vas deferens is accessed through one or two small incisions or punctures in the scrotum. No-scalpel vasectomy is now the most common technique and is associated with fewer complications.

Will a vasectomy affect sexual function or hormone levels?

No — vasectomy does not affect testosterone levels, libido, erectile function, or ejaculation. The only change is the absence of sperm in the ejaculate — which is not noticeable. Sexual function and pleasure are unaffected.

What side effects and risks are associated with vasectomy?

Common post-procedure effects include temporary scrotal soreness, swelling, and bruising resolving within days to weeks. Serious complications — infection, hematoma, chronic scrotal pain (post-vasectomy pain syndrome) — occur in a small minority of patients. Sperm granuloma is an uncommon inflammatory reaction at the vas site. Vasectomy Referral visit What to expect from a Vasectomy Referral visit
