Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between dyspepsia and acid reflux?

Dyspepsia refers to upper abdominal discomfort, fullness, or early satiation — often without heartburn. Acid reflux involves stomach acid backing into the esophagus, causing heartburn. They can coexist and share some treatments but have distinct causes.

Does an upset stomach always need medical attention?

Occasional indigestion after a large or rich meal is common and usually self-limiting. When discomfort is frequent, persistent, worsening, or accompanied by unintentional weight loss, swallowing difficulty, or blood in stool — clinical evaluation is important.

Could my symptoms be caused by H. pylori?

H. pylori is a significant cause of functional dyspepsia and peptic ulcers. Testing is appropriate when symptoms are frequent or persistent — and eradicating the infection with antibiotic treatment often resolves symptoms that haven't responded to acid suppression alone.

Are there dietary changes that help?

Eating smaller meals, avoiding fatty or spicy foods, limiting caffeine and alcohol, and not lying down after eating can reduce symptoms. These are helpful but often insufficient for frequent dyspepsia — prescription treatment addresses the underlying physiology more directly.

What side effects are associated with dyspepsia treatments?

Proton pump inhibitors — the most commonly prescribed option — are generally well-tolerated but with long-term use may affect magnesium levels and B12 absorption. Antacids and H2 blockers have minimal side effects for short-term use. Upset Stomach (Dyspepsia) visit What to expect from a Upset Stomach (Dyspepsia) visit
