What is Ubrelvy (Ubrogepant)?

Ubrelvy is a prescription medication taken at the onset of a migraine to stop it in its tracks—not to prevent migraines from happening. It belongs to a newer class of drugs called CGRP receptor antagonists, which block a protein involved in triggering migraine pain and inflammation. Unlike older migraine treatments, Ubrelvy doesn't constrict blood vessels, making it an option for people who can't take triptans due to cardiovascular concerns. It can be taken as a single dose, with a second dose available if the migraine returns.

CGRP blockade

Blocks calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptors, interrupting the inflammatory cascade that drives migraine pain, pressure, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Fast acute relief

Designed to work at the onset of a migraine, with many patients experiencing meaningful pain relief within 2 hours of taking the first dose.

Cardiovascular-friendly option

Unlike triptans, Ubrelvy doesn't cause vasoconstriction, making it a viable choice for migraine sufferers with heart conditions or who haven't responded well to other treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly does Ubrelvy work?

Many people experience meaningful pain relief within 2 hours of taking it. Ubrelvy is most effective when taken at the first sign of a migraine rather than waiting until the headache is fully established.

Can I take a second dose if my migraine returns?

Yes. If the migraine returns after initial relief, a second dose can be taken at least 2 hours after the first. No more than two doses should be taken within any 24-hour period.

How is Ubrelvy different from triptans?

Ubrelvy works by blocking CGRP receptors rather than constricting blood vessels, making it an option for people who can't take triptans due to cardiovascular concerns or who haven't responded well to them.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea and drowsiness are the most commonly reported side effects and are generally mild. Ubrelvy does not cause the chest tightness or pressure that some people experience with triptan medications.

Can I take Ubrelvy with my other migraine medications?

Some combinations are fine; others are not. Ubrelvy interacts with certain medications including strong CYP3A4 inhibitors. Your clinician will review your full medication list before prescribing.
