What is Trulicity (Dulaglutide)?

Trulicity is a once-weekly injectable GLP-1 receptor agonist used to improve blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes, and to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in patients with established heart disease or multiple cardiovascular risk factors. It mimics GLP-1, a naturally occurring hormone that stimulates insulin release, suppresses glucagon, and slows gastric emptying after meals. Many patients also experience meaningful weight loss as a secondary benefit. It's injected subcutaneously once weekly using a pre-filled, single-use auto-injector pen.

GLP-1 receptor activation

Mimics the incretin hormone GLP-1, stimulating glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, and slowing gastric emptying—lowering blood sugar after meals without causing hypoglycemia on its own.

Cardiovascular risk reduction

Clinical trials demonstrated that Trulicity reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke in Type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease—a benefit that extends beyond glucose control.

Once-weekly convenience

A single subcutaneous injection per week eliminates the burden of daily dosing, and the pre-filled auto-injector is designed for easy self-administration without dose preparation or needle handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Trulicity different from other diabetes injections like insulin?

Trulicity is a GLP-1 receptor agonist — it stimulates insulin release only when blood sugar is elevated, reducing hypoglycemia risk. Insulin lowers blood sugar directly regardless of current levels. They work through completely different mechanisms.

How do I inject Trulicity correctly?

Inject subcutaneously into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once weekly. The pre-filled autoinjector is single-use — press firmly against the skin until a click is heard. Rotate sites each week.

Can Trulicity help with weight loss?

Yes. Weight loss is a common secondary benefit — most people lose meaningful weight with consistent weekly use. This additional benefit further supports metabolic health in Type 2 diabetes management.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain are most common — particularly in the first few weeks as the body adjusts. These typically improve over time. Pancreatitis has been reported rarely — report severe persistent abdominal pain.

Does Trulicity have heart benefits?

Yes. Clinical trials demonstrated that Trulicity reduces the risk of major cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke in people with Type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease or risk factors.
