What is Trelegy Ellipta?

Trelegy Ellipta is a once-daily triple combination inhaler for COPD and asthma maintenance therapy, containing three medications in a single device: fluticasone furoate (an inhaled corticosteroid), umeclidinium (a long-acting muscarinic antagonist), and vilanterol (a long-acting beta-2 agonist). Together, these three classes of bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory medication provide the most comprehensive airway management available in a single inhaler. It reduces COPD exacerbations, improves lung function, and relieves symptoms more effectively than dual-therapy options—all from one inhalation once each morning.

Triple mechanism airway control

Fluticasone reduces airway inflammation, umeclidinium blocks muscarinic receptors to relax airway smooth muscle via the cholinergic pathway, and vilanterol activates beta-2 receptors for additional bronchodilation—three complementary mechanisms delivering comprehensive COPD and asthma management.

COPD exacerbation reduction

The combination of ICS, LAMA, and LABA in a single inhaler has demonstrated superior reduction in COPD exacerbation rates compared to dual-therapy combinations—a clinically meaningful outcome that reduces hospitalizations and preserves lung function.

Single-inhaler convenience

Consolidates a full triple therapy regimen into one once-daily inhalation, eliminating the complexity and potential adherence issues of managing multiple separate inhalers throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Trelegy Ellipta and what does it treat?

Trelegy is a once-daily triple combination inhaler approved for COPD and asthma maintenance. It combines three drug classes — an inhaled steroid, a long-acting muscarinic antagonist, and a long-acting beta-agonist — in a single device.

Can I use Trelegy as a rescue inhaler?

No. Trelegy is a daily maintenance inhaler — it prevents symptoms over time but doesn't provide fast enough relief for sudden breathlessness. A separate short-acting rescue inhaler should always be available.

How do I use the Ellipta inhaler device correctly?

Slide the cover down to prepare the dose, exhale fully away from the inhaler, inhale quickly and deeply through the mouthpiece, hold your breath for 3–4 seconds, then exhale slowly. Rinse your mouth with water and spit afterward.

What side effects might I experience?

Upper respiratory infections, oral thrush, headache, and back pain are the most commonly reported. Rinsing your mouth after use reduces thrush risk from the fluticasone component. Pneumonia risk may be slightly increased in COPD patients.

Is Trelegy better than dual-therapy inhalers for COPD?

Clinical trials showed Trelegy reduces COPD exacerbations more effectively than LAMA/LABA combinations and ICS/LABA combinations — particularly in patients with frequent exacerbations or elevated blood eosinophil counts.
