Frequently Asked Questions

What is TMJ disorder and what causes it?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder refers to pain and dysfunction involving the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. Common causes include jaw clenching or teeth grinding (bruxism), stress, bite misalignment, arthritis, and joint structural changes. It's very common and often self-limiting.

How do I know if my jaw pain is TMJ disorder or something else?

TMJ disorder typically causes pain at or near the jaw joint, temple, or ear — often worse with chewing, yawning, or talking — accompanied by clicking or popping, limited jaw opening, or jaw locking. Ear pain, dental pain, or headache can mimic TMJ. Clinical evaluation distinguishes between causes.

Will I need surgery for TMJ disorder?

The vast majority of TMJ disorders respond to conservative management — most improve within weeks to months without surgery. Conservative approaches are always recommended first. Surgery is reserved for a small subset with structural joint disease unresponsive to all other interventions.

Can a night guard help with TMJ pain?

Occlusal splints (night guards) reduce the impact of clenching and grinding on the joint and muscles. Evidence for their effectiveness in reducing TMJ pain is moderate — they help many patients, particularly when bruxism is a contributing factor, and are a low-risk first-line intervention.

What side effects are associated with TMJ treatments?

NSAIDs carry GI side effect risk with regular use. Muscle relaxants may cause drowsiness. Botulinum toxin injections into the masseter muscle can cause temporary difficulty chewing and mild asymmetry. Night guards are very safe — occasional bite changes have been reported with prolonged use of hard acrylic splints. TMJ (Jaw Pain) visit What to expect from a TMJ (Jaw Pain) visit
