Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do immediately after finding a tick?

Remove the tick promptly using fine-tipped tweezers — grasp as close to the skin surface as possible and pull straight out with steady pressure. Clean the bite site with alcohol or soap and water. Do not twist, crush, or use petroleum jelly or heat. Save the tick in a sealed bag if possible for identification.

How long does a tick need to be attached to transmit Lyme disease?

Transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) typically requires the tick (Ixodes scapularis) to be attached for at least 36–48 hours. Prompt removal — within this window — significantly reduces transmission risk. Shorter attachment carries minimal risk even in endemic areas.

Do I need antibiotics after a tick bite?

Prophylactic antibiotic treatment (single-dose doxycycline) is recommended when the bite involves an Ixodes species tick, was in an endemic area, the tick was attached for 36+ hours, and treatment can start within 72 hours of removal. It is not recommended for every tick bite.

What symptoms of Lyme disease should I watch for after a tick bite?

The classic erythema migrans rash — an expanding red rash often with a central clearing, appearing 3–30 days after the bite — is the most specific early sign. Flu-like symptoms (fatigue, fever, joint aches) without rash also occur. Any concerning symptoms after a tick bite warrant prompt evaluation.

What side effects are associated with tick bite treatments?

Single-dose prophylactic doxycycline may cause GI upset and photosensitivity — taking with food and using sun protection helps. Longer treatment courses for confirmed Lyme disease carry the same effects plus risk of GI flora disruption. Doxycycline is not used in pregnancy or young children — alternative agents are discussed at evaluation. Tick Bites visit What to expect from a Tick Bites visit
