What is Tegretol-XR?

Tegretol-XR is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer used to treat epilepsy (including partial seizures, tonic-clonic seizures, and mixed patterns), trigeminal neuralgia, and bipolar disorder. It works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neurons, stabilizing hyperexcitable cell membranes and reducing abnormal electrical firing. For trigeminal neuralgia, it's one of the most effective treatments available—dramatically reducing the frequency and intensity of the severe lancinating facial pain. It requires gradual dose titration and regular blood monitoring for liver function, blood counts, and drug levels due to its narrow therapeutic window and potential for drug interactions.

Blocks inactivated sodium channels in neuronal membranes in a use-dependent manner, reducing the rapid repetitive firing that underlies seizure propagation and trigeminal nerve hypersensitivity.
