What is Tazarotene (Tazorac)?

Tazorac is a prescription topical retinoid gel or cream used to treat plaque psoriasis and acne. It's one of the most potent topical retinoids available and works by binding to retinoic acid receptors in skin cells to normalize the abnormal cell turnover and differentiation that drives both conditions. For psoriasis, it reduces the rapid skin cell buildup that forms thick, scaly plaques. For acne, it unclogs pores by preventing the sticky follicular plugs that lead to comedones and breakouts. It's applied once daily in the evening and requires sunscreen use due to increased photosensitivity.

Retinoic acid receptor activation

Binds to RAR-β and RAR-γ receptors in skin cells, normalizing keratinocyte differentiation and proliferation—correcting the abnormal cell turnover that causes psoriatic plaques and acne-prone follicular plugging.

Psoriasis plaque reduction

Slows the excessive skin cell production in psoriasis and promotes more normal shedding, reducing the thickness, scaling, and inflammation of established plaques with consistent use.

Retinoid-grade acne clearance

As one of the strongest topical retinoids, Tazarotene effectively unclogs pores, reduces comedone formation, and improves inflammatory acne—often used for patients who haven't achieved adequate results with less potent retinoids like tretinoin or adapalene.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before Tazorac improves acne or psoriasis?

For acne, meaningful improvement typically takes 8–12 weeks of consistent once-daily use. For psoriasis, plaque reduction may begin within 4 weeks, with continued improvement over the following months.

Why is Tazorac so irritating at first?

Retinoids accelerate skin cell turnover, which causes dryness, redness, and peeling in the first 2–6 weeks — particularly with a potent retinoid like tazarotene. Starting with every-other-night application can help the skin adjust.

Should I apply it in the morning or evening?

Evening application is generally recommended since tazarotene increases photosensitivity. If used in the morning, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is essential. Applying to fully dry skin after cleansing reduces irritation.

What side effects might I experience?

Dryness, peeling, redness, burning, stinging, and worsening acne in the first weeks are very common. Using a gentle non-comedogenic moisturizer and avoiding other potentially irritating products helps manage early-stage reactions.

Is Tazorac safe during pregnancy?

No. Tazarotene is teratogenic — it can cause serious birth defects and is contraindicated in pregnancy. Effective contraception is required before and during treatment. Inform your clinician immediately if pregnancy occurs while using it.
