What is Tamiflu?

Tamiflu is an antiviral medication prescribed to treat influenza (the flu) in people who have been symptomatic for no more than 48 hours, and to prevent flu in those who have been exposed. It works by blocking a key enzyme the influenza virus uses to spread from cell to cell, containing the infection before it can fully take hold. When taken early, it can shorten the duration of flu symptoms by 1–2 days and reduce the risk of serious complications. It's taken twice daily for 5 days for treatment, or once daily for prevention.

Neuraminidase inhibition

Blocks the neuraminidase enzyme on the surface of influenza A and B viruses, preventing newly formed viral particles from breaking free of infected cells and spreading further.

Time-sensitive effectiveness

Most effective when started within 48 hours of symptom onset—early treatment gives the best chance of shortening illness duration and reducing severity.

Complication prevention

Reduces the risk of flu-related complications like pneumonia and hospitalization, particularly important for high-risk patients including the elderly and immunocompromised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tamiflu cure the flu?

Tamiflu doesn't cure the flu, but when started within 48 hours of symptoms it can shorten illness by 1–2 days and reduce the risk of serious complications like pneumonia — particularly important for high-risk patients.

Is there a point at which it's too late to take it?

Tamiflu is most effective within 48 hours of symptom onset. After that window, benefit diminishes significantly for otherwise healthy people, though clinicians may still prescribe it for high-risk individuals.

Can Tamiflu be used to prevent flu after exposure?

Yes. At a once-daily preventive dose, it can reduce flu risk after known exposure — such as a household contact with confirmed flu. Prevention courses typically last 10 days.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea and vomiting are most common, especially with the first dose. Taking it with food significantly reduces these effects. Headache and stomach pain can also occur during the treatment course.

Is Tamiflu the same as a flu vaccine?

No. Tamiflu is an antiviral for treatment and post-exposure prevention — it doesn't provide immunity. Annual flu vaccination remains the primary and recommended strategy for flu prevention.
