What is Sutab?

Sutab is a prescription bowel preparation taken before colonoscopy to completely cleanse the colon of stool and debris so the procedure can be performed effectively. It contains sodium sulfate, magnesium sulfate, and potassium chloride in tablet form—a tablet-based alternative to liquid bowel prep solutions. The tablets work as an osmotic laxative by drawing large amounts of water into the intestinal tract, rapidly flushing the colon. It's taken as two split doses—one the evening before and one the morning of the colonoscopy—each with large amounts of water, and should not be taken by patients with kidney disease without medical supervision.

Osmotic bowel flush

The sulfate and chloride salt combination creates a strong osmotic gradient that draws fluid into the intestinal lumen, producing a high-volume watery diarrhea that rapidly and thoroughly cleanses the entire colon of stool and debris.

Tablet-based convenience

Sutab delivers the osmotic laxative effect through tablets rather than a large volume of liquid solution—reducing the unpleasant taste and volume challenges that make traditional liquid bowel preps difficult for many patients to complete.

Split-dose preparation

Divided into two doses taken the evening before and morning of colonoscopy, the split-dose schedule improves colon cleansing quality by timing the second dose closer to the procedure—while requiring adequate water intake to prevent dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Sutab different from liquid bowel preps?

Sutab delivers the colonoscopy bowel prep as tablets rather than requiring patients to drink large volumes of unpleasant liquid solution — removing the taste and volume challenge that makes traditional liquid preps hard to complete.

How do I take Sutab?

The prep is split into two doses — one set of tablets the evening before and one set the morning of the colonoscopy. Each set of tablets is taken with specific amounts of water over a set period. Follow the instructions precisely.

Can I eat normally before starting Sutab?

No. A clear liquid diet is required the day before colonoscopy. Avoid solid foods, dairy, and colored liquids. Follow your clinician's specific pre-procedure dietary instructions to ensure adequate bowel cleansing.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloating are most commonly reported. Electrolyte changes — particularly in patients with kidney disease, heart failure, or on diuretics — require careful consideration before using.

Is Sutab safe for patients with kidney disease?

Use caution. The magnesium and phosphate content of some bowel preps poses risks for patients with reduced kidney function. Your clinician will assess whether Sutab is the safest prep option for your specific kidney health.
