What is Suprax (Cefixime)?

Suprax is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including uncomplicated urinary tract infections, otitis media (ear infections), pharyngitis and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, and uncomplicated gonorrhea. It works by disrupting bacterial cell wall construction, causing bacteria to lyse and die. As a third-generation cephalosporin, it offers broader gram-negative coverage than earlier generations, making it effective against a wider range of pathogens. It can be taken once or twice daily depending on the infection being treated.

Beta-lactam cell wall disruption

Binds to penicillin-binding proteins and inhibits the cross-linking of peptidoglycan in bacterial cell walls, compromising their structural integrity and causing bacteria to lyse and die.

Third-generation gram-negative spectrum

Provides broader coverage against gram-negative bacteria than earlier cephalosporins—effective against pathogens including E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae that cause urinary, ear, and sexually transmitted infections.

Oral third-generation convenience

Delivers third-generation cephalosporin-level coverage in oral form, allowing outpatient treatment of infections that benefit from broader-spectrum antibiotics without requiring intravenous or intramuscular administration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What infections does Suprax treat?

Suprax is used for ear infections, throat and tonsil infections, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhea. As a third-generation cephalosporin, it covers a broader range of bacteria than older oral antibiotics.

Should I take Suprax with food?

Suprax can be taken with or without food. Taking it with food may reduce stomach upset. The oral suspension form should be shaken well before each dose.

How long does a typical course last?

Most courses last 7–14 days depending on the type of infection. Complete the full course even if you feel better before it's finished — stopping early increases the risk of recurrence and antibiotic resistance.

What side effects might I experience?

Diarrhea, nausea, and stomach upset are most common. Severe diarrhea — particularly watery or bloody — should be reported to your clinician as it may indicate C. difficile infection. Rash and allergic reactions can also occur.

Is Suprax safe if I have a penicillin allergy?

Cross-reactivity between penicillins and cephalosporins is low but possible. The nature of your penicillin allergy determines the risk — always inform your clinician about any antibiotic allergies before starting Suprax.
