Frequently Asked Questions

What is a stye and what causes it?

A stye (hordeolum) is an acute, painful infection of an eyelid gland — the oil-producing meibomian gland (internal stye) or lash follicle gland (external stye). It presents as a red, tender lump on the eyelid, often with a visible pus point. It is typically caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

What is the best home treatment for a stye?

Warm compresses applied for 10–15 minutes, 3–4 times daily, are the primary treatment — they soften the contents and promote spontaneous drainage. Do not squeeze or attempt to pop a stye — this risks spreading infection. Most styes resolve within 1–2 weeks with consistent warm compress therapy.

When does a stye need medical treatment?

Seek evaluation if the stye doesn't begin improving after 1–2 weeks of warm compresses, if swelling extends beyond the eyelid to surrounding tissues (periorbital cellulitis), if vision is affected, or if you have recurrent styes — which may indicate an underlying skin condition or need for lid hygiene optimization.

Are styes contagious?

Direct spread is uncommon, but the bacteria causing styes can be transmitted through shared towels, pillowcases, or eye makeup. Avoid sharing these items during an active stye. Washing hands before touching the eye area is good practice generally.

What side effects are associated with stye treatments?

Warm compresses are completely safe. Topical antibiotic ointments — sometimes prescribed when infection is spreading — carry minimal side effects, occasionally causing mild irritation. Oral antibiotics are used when cellulitis has developed. Incision and drainage for a persistent stye is a minor procedure with temporary soreness afterward.
