Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between stomach flu and food poisoning?

Both cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and cramping — but food poisoning typically begins within hours of a specific meal, while viral gastroenteritis has a 1–3 day incubation period. Bacterial food poisoning tends to cause more severe symptoms. The distinction matters mainly if symptoms are severe or prolonged.

How do I prevent dehydration during gastroenteritis?

Oral rehydration — small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solution, clear broths, or diluted electrolyte drinks — is the priority. Water alone doesn't replace lost electrolytes. In children, avoiding juice and sugary drinks is important. IV fluids may be needed if oral intake is not tolerated.

Do I need antibiotics for gastroenteritis?

Most gastroenteritis is viral and does not respond to antibiotics. Bacterial gastroenteritis sometimes warrants antibiotic treatment — particularly in immunocompromised individuals, severe cases, or specific pathogens like Clostridioides difficile, Shigella, or traveler's diarrhea. Stool testing guides this decision.

How long does stomach flu last?

Viral gastroenteritis typically resolves within 1–3 days, though some cases last up to a week. Symptoms lasting beyond 7 days, particularly with high fever or blood in stool, warrant clinical evaluation to consider bacterial causes or other conditions.

What side effects are associated with gastroenteritis treatments?

Oral rehydration solutions are very safe. Loperamide reduces diarrhea frequency but should not be used when fever or bloody stool is present. Antiemetics including ondansetron have minimal side effects. Antibiotics when prescribed carry standard GI and resistance-related considerations.
