Frequently Asked Questions

When does a sports injury need imaging?

Imaging is indicated when fracture is suspected — based on point tenderness over bone, inability to bear weight, or significant mechanism of injury — or when a soft tissue injury isn't responding to conservative management. Not all sports injuries require X-rays; many sprains and muscle strains are diagnosed clinically.

What is the RICE method and when should I use it?

Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation is appropriate initial management for acute soft tissue injuries — sprains, strains, and minor contusions — in the first 24–48 hours. While newer guidance (PEACE & LOVE) refines this approach, reducing swelling and protecting the injured area early remains central to recovery.

When should I see a clinician rather than managing a sports injury at home?

Seek evaluation for suspected fracture, joint instability, complete inability to bear weight or use the injured limb, significant swelling or bruising, numbness or weakness, or pain that isn't improving within a few days of rest and home management.

How long does recovery from a sports injury typically take?

Recovery depends on injury type and severity. Mild sprains may resolve in 1–2 weeks. Moderate ligament injuries take 4–8 weeks. Tendon injuries and more significant structural damage can take 3–6 months or more. Early appropriate management and rehabilitation significantly influence recovery time.

What side effects are associated with sports injury treatments?

NSAIDs are effective for pain and inflammation but carry GI side effect risk — take with food and limit duration. Corticosteroid injections may cause temporary pain flare and, with repeated use, tendon weakening. Physical therapy is very safe. Surgical treatment carries standard procedural risks.
