What is Solosec (Secnidazole)?

Solosec is a single-dose oral antibiotic prescribed to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV) and trichomoniasis in adults. It's taken as one packet of granules—sprinkled onto soft food and swallowed—making it one of the most convenient treatment options available for these infections. Secnidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic that works by disrupting the DNA of the bacteria or parasites causing the infection. The single-dose format removes the compliance challenge of multi-day antibiotic courses while still delivering effective treatment.

DNA disruption

Secnidazole enters bacterial and protozoal cells and damages their DNA, preventing the organisms from replicating and effectively eliminating the infection at its source.

Single-dose convenience

The entire course of treatment is delivered in one packet—no multi-day regimen to remember or complete—significantly reducing the risk of incomplete treatment due to missed doses.

Dual indication

Approved for both bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis, two of the most common vaginal infections in adults, with a simple, consistent administration method for both.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Solosec really just one dose?

Yes — the entire treatment is one packet of granules mixed into soft food and swallowed. There are no follow-up doses required for most patients, making it one of the simplest antibiotic regimens available.

What does it treat?

Solosec is FDA-approved to treat bacterial vaginosis (BV) and trichomoniasis in adults. These are two distinct infections with different causes, and Solosec is effective for both with the same single dose.

Should my partner be treated too?

For trichomoniasis, yes — it's a sexually transmitted infection and partners should be treated simultaneously to prevent reinfection. For BV, partner treatment is not routinely recommended but may be discussed.

What side effects might I experience?

Nausea, headache, vaginal discharge changes, and a metallic taste in the mouth are the most commonly reported effects. Most are mild and resolve quickly given that it's a single-dose treatment.

Can I drink alcohol after taking Solosec?

Avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after taking Solosec. Combining secnidazole with alcohol can cause an unpleasant reaction including nausea, flushing, rapid heartbeat, and headache.
