Frequently Asked Questions

What causes sleepwalking and sleep talking?

Both are non-REM parasomnias — partial arousals from deep sleep where behavior occurs without full wakefulness. Contributing factors include sleep deprivation, fever, stress, certain medications (sedatives, sleep aids), alcohol, and genetics. They're more common in children but can persist or emerge in adults.

Is sleepwalking dangerous?

Sleepwalking itself isn't inherently dangerous, but the behaviors it produces can be — particularly descending stairs, leaving the home, or operating appliances. Environmental safety modifications — door alarms, stair gates, removing hazards — are a practical first step before any medical intervention.

Do sleepwalking and sleep talking need treatment?

Infrequent episodes without safety risk or daytime impairment typically don't require medication. Addressing contributing factors — improving sleep hygiene, reducing sleep deprivation, reviewing medications — is the first intervention. Medication is considered for frequent, disruptive, or dangerous episodes.

Could an underlying sleep disorder be causing my parasomnias?

Yes — obstructive sleep apnea can trigger NREM parasomnias and is an important consideration in adults with new or worsening sleepwalking. A sleep study may be recommended to evaluate for OSA or other co-occurring sleep disorders contributing to the episodes.

What side effects are associated with parasomnia treatments?

Benzodiazepines — particularly clonazepam — are commonly used for frequent or dangerous NREM parasomnias and may cause daytime sedation, balance issues, and dependency risk. Melatonin at low doses is better tolerated and may help regulate sleep architecture. Treating underlying OSA often resolves parasomnias.
