Frequently Asked Questions

Why would my clinician refer me for a sleep study?

Sleep studies are ordered to evaluate suspected obstructive sleep apnea, other breathing-related sleep disorders, narcolepsy, periodic limb movement disorder, parasomnias, or unexplained excessive daytime sleepiness. They provide objective data that cannot be obtained from clinical history alone.

What is the difference between a home sleep test and an in-lab study?

A home sleep apnea test records breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and heart rate during sleep in your own bed — appropriate for straightforward suspected OSA. In-lab polysomnography records a broader range of data including brain waves, eye movements, and muscle activity — needed for more complex or uncertain diagnoses.

How do I prepare for a sleep study?

Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day of the study. Maintain your normal sleep schedule in the days prior. Bring comfortable sleepwear. For in-lab studies, arrive with your hair clean and free of products, as sensors are applied to the scalp. You'll sleep in a private room monitored remotely.

What happens after the sleep study results are available?

Results are interpreted by a sleep medicine specialist and reported to your referring clinician. A follow-up visit reviews findings and discusses treatment options — which may include CPAP, oral appliance therapy, behavioral interventions, or further evaluation depending on the diagnosis.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with sleep studies?

Home sleep tests are non-invasive with no side effects. In-lab polysomnography involves surface electrode application — mild skin irritation from adhesives is the most common complaint. There are no significant medical risks. Many patients sleep less well than usual in the lab, which is factored into interpretation.
