Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between short-term and chronic insomnia?

Short-term insomnia lasts less than 3 months — often triggered by a specific stressor, illness, travel, or life change — and typically resolves once the trigger passes. Chronic insomnia persists for 3 months or more, occurring at least 3 nights per week, despite adequate sleep opportunity, and causing daytime impairment. Chronic insomnia requires targeted treatment.

What is the most effective long-term treatment for chronic insomnia?

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the most evidence-supported treatment for chronic insomnia — producing more durable outcomes than sleep medication alone and remaining effective after treatment ends. It addresses the conditioned arousal, cognitive patterns, and behavioral factors maintaining insomnia rather than just managing symptoms.

Is it safe to take sleep medication every night?

Most prescription sleep medications are not recommended for nightly use beyond 2–4 weeks without reassessment. Tolerance, dependence, and next-day cognitive impairment are concerns with regular use of benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics (z-drugs). Newer options like suvorexant (Belsomra) and low-dose doxepin have somewhat different profiles, but clinical guidance remains important.

Can poor sleep affect my physical health?

Yes — chronic sleep deprivation and insomnia are associated with increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, immune dysfunction, and mood disorders. Sleep quality is now recognized as a core component of overall health — comparable in importance to diet and physical activity.

What side effects are associated with insomnia treatments?

Benzodiazepines and z-drugs (zolpidem, eszopiclone) may cause next-day sedation, memory impairment, and dependency with regular use. Melatonin is very well tolerated at low doses. Suvorexant may cause vivid dreams and next-day drowsiness. CBT-I produces temporary worsening of sleep early in treatment (sleep restriction component) before producing sustained improvement.
