What is Skyrizi?

Skyrizi is a biologic injectable medication used to treat moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, Crohn's disease, and ulcerative colitis. It works by specifically targeting interleukin-23 (IL-23), a protein that plays a central role in driving the chronic inflammation responsible for these conditions. By blocking IL-23, Skyrizi interrupts the inflammatory cascade upstream—before it triggers the immune cells that cause skin plaques, joint inflammation, and intestinal damage. For psoriasis, it's given as two injections at week 0 and 4, then every 12 weeks.

Selective IL-23 inhibition

Binds to the p19 subunit of IL-23, blocking this cytokine's ability to activate Th17 immune cells—the primary drivers of the chronic skin, joint, and intestinal inflammation in its approved indications.

Upstream pathway blockade

By targeting IL-23 before it triggers downstream inflammatory cascades, Skyrizi interrupts the inflammation earlier and more completely than treatments that block end-stage cytokines like IL-17.

How quickly does Skyrizi work for psoriasis?

Many patients see significant skin clearing within 10–16 weeks of the initial dosing period. Clinical trials showed continued improvement over the first year, with many patients achieving clear or almost clear skin.

How often are Skyrizi injections given for psoriasis?

After two starter doses at weeks 0 and 4, maintenance injections are given just once every 12 weeks — four times per year. This is one of the least frequent dosing schedules among psoriasis biologics.

Do I need blood monitoring while on Skyrizi?

Routine blood monitoring is not required for most patients, unlike some other biologics and immunosuppressants. Your clinician will assess your overall health and infection risk at periodic follow-up visits.

What side effects might I experience?

Upper respiratory infections, headache, fatigue, and injection site reactions are most common. Because Skyrizi suppresses part of the immune response, infections may occur more frequently — report persistent fever or illness.

Can I take Skyrizi if I have a history of tuberculosis?

You will be tested for TB before starting Skyrizi. Active TB must be treated first. A history of latent TB may require preventive treatment before or during Skyrizi therapy — your clinician will manage this appropriately.
