Frequently Asked Questions

What causes chronically dry skin?

Dry skin results from impaired skin barrier function, reduced sebaceous gland activity, low humidity, hot water exposure, harsh soaps, and aging. Underlying conditions — hypothyroidism, diabetes, atopic dermatitis, and certain medications — can also cause or significantly worsen xerosis.

How do I choose the right moisturizer?

Ointments (petroleum-based) provide the most occlusive barrier and are best for severe dryness but feel greasy. Creams balance efficacy and cosmetic feel and work well for most people. Lotions are lighter but less effective for significant xerosis. Fragrance-free formulations reduce irritation risk.

When should dry skin be evaluated by a clinician?

Seek evaluation when dryness is severe, widespread, doesn't respond to consistent moisturizing, is accompanied by significant itching, redness, or cracking, or when it's new and unexplained — particularly in adults, where it can reflect an underlying systemic condition.

Does drinking more water improve dry skin?

Hydration supports overall health, but the evidence that drinking more water directly improves skin dryness is limited. Skin barrier function is more dependent on topical care and environmental factors than internal hydration in most people.

What side effects are associated with dry skin treatments?

Emollients and moisturizers are very well tolerated — fragrance sensitivity is the most common concern. Prescription urea or lactic acid creams may cause temporary stinging. If an underlying condition is identified and treated — such as hypothyroidism — treatment of that condition carries its own side effect profile.
