What is Simbrinza?

Simbrinza is a prescription eye drop combining two intraocular pressure-lowering medications—brimonidine (an alpha-2 agonist) and brinzolamide (a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor)—in a single drop for patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Each ingredient lowers IOP through a different mechanism, and their combination provides additive pressure reduction compared to either drug used alone. By pairing two complementary mechanisms in one drop, Simbrinza reduces the number of separate eye drops patients need to manage, improving convenience and adherence. It's applied three times daily.

Dual complementary IOP reduction

Brimonidine reduces aqueous humor production and increases uveoscleral outflow via alpha-2 receptor activation, while brinzolamide inhibits carbonic anhydrase to reduce aqueous secretion through a separate pathway—providing additive pressure lowering.

Alpha-2 agonist component

Brimonidine activates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the ciliary body, suppressing aqueous humor production while also increasing the alternative uveoscleral drainage route to further lower intraocular pressure.

Simplified glaucoma regimen

Combining two different drug classes in one drop reduces the total number of eye drop bottles and instillations needed each day—improving adherence in patients already managing multiple glaucoma medications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Simbrinza used for?

Simbrinza is a prescription eye drop combining two glaucoma medications — brimonidine and brinzolamide — to lower intraocular pressure in open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension when a single drop isn't providing enough control.

How many times a day do I need to use Simbrinza?

Simbrinza is applied three times daily — morning, midday, and evening. Consistent spacing throughout the day helps maintain steady intraocular pressure reduction.

Can I use Simbrinza alongside other glaucoma drops?

Simbrinza is designed as an add-on when a single agent is insufficient. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5–10 minutes between applying different drops to prevent dilution and ensure each medication is fully absorbed.

What side effects might I experience?

Blurred vision after instillation, stinging or burning, eye redness, drowsiness, and dry mouth are the most commonly reported effects. Brimonidine can cause drowsiness in some patients — note this if driving or operating machinery.

Is Simbrinza safe for patients with cardiovascular disease?

Brimonidine can affect heart rate and blood pressure in some patients. People with severe cardiovascular disease, depression, or Raynaud's phenomenon should discuss the appropriateness of brimonidine-containing drops with their clinician.
