What is Silvadene?

Silvadene is a prescription topical antimicrobial cream used to prevent and treat bacterial and fungal infections in patients with second and third degree burns. It combines the antimicrobial properties of silver with the antibiotic activity of sulfadiazine, providing broad-spectrum coverage against the wide range of organisms that can colonize burn wounds. Applied directly to the burn surface and covered with a dressing once or twice daily, it helps keep the wound clean and infection-free during the critical healing period. It also provides a moist wound environment that supports tissue healing.

Silver ions disrupt bacterial cell membrane function and inhibit enzyme activity through multiple simultaneous mechanisms, while sulfadiazine blocks folate synthesis—providing broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal coverage across the diverse pathogens that threaten burn wounds.

Effective against gram-positive bacteria, gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida yeast—addressing the full spectrum of organisms that colonize and infect serious burns during the vulnerable healing period.

The cream base maintains appropriate wound moisture that supports epithelialization and healing, while the antimicrobial activity protects against the infection that is the primary cause of morbidity in serious burn patients.
